Check out the videos of this year. There is a new one of the band at Disneyland. A special “THANKS” goes to Rick Cummins who explained, “As the video guy for this year, my goal is to post many mini-videos throughout the year on YouTube so the kids and their families can share their experiences when they happen rather than waiting for a large disc set at the end of the year.” Click on the video link at left and pick which video you want to view. Also, check out the article in The Sun newspaper about the first football game performance; click here for the article.

Freshman and New Member Info
Here are some things that new band parents should know as we get ready to start our new season. There are a few changes this year and I know this is long, so bear with me!
“Fees” –
There have been some changes to the “rules” when it comes to required band fees. Those changes are meant to ensure that no one is excluded from participating in our band programs for financial reasons. They also mean that we need to look at some expenses differently and will be asking you to order items separately that may have been lumped into “band fees” in the past. Please be patient as we find our way through the new processes.
Uniforms –
Students have been fitted for a uniform to use this year. New pants are expected to arrive mid-season. We are very fortunate that the costume department for the show “Glee” has rented a few of our uniforms a few times for use on the show. They have currently a few uniforms and they won’t be back in time for this Friday’s football game. The kids will instead be wearing the black band shirts they normally wear under their uniform (it has “Redlands East Valley High School Marching Wildcats” and a Wildcat on the front in white). If you need a new shirt they will be available from Rick and Theresa Cummins and/or Deborah Perez before the open house on Thursday night or before the game on Friday. If your student has outgrown their old shirt we would appreciate it if you would donate the shirt back to be issued to a student that may not be able to afford a new one.
The kids will also fitted for “Dinkles” (those shiny black vinyl shoes). If they need new shoes they will be available for purchase (or a used pair will be provided if they are unable to purchase). We would appreciate it if you would donate outgrown shoes so that they can be made available to those who are unable to purchase them.
The official “show shirt” will be available for purchase soon. You must purchase a shirt for your student, and the coordinating “booster version” for yourself, if you want them to have one.
Some students will be issued a pair of white gloves to wear. Don’t be surprised if your clarinet or flute player asks for a scissors to cut the fingertips off of their gloves to allow their fingers to connect with the keys. Those gloves get REALLY dirty during the season (tarnish from their instrument) so periodic washing is good!
All wind and brass players will need a pair of white “tube” socks to use as glove covers. They cut the end off of the sock and put it on their arms to bridge any gap between their gloves and the end of their uniform sleeve when they lift their arms to play. Since these usually come in a large pack it’s great to have them pair up with friends to share a bag, or you can donate extras to the Quartermasters for students who don’t have them.
The Battery will need black wrist bands. They put them at the end of their sleeves as they play. They also all tend to wear black Under Armor shirts – guess it’s because they’re really cool?
All students will need to wear black socks with the uniform. Those socks need to be the type that come up to cover their ankles/lower calves so no skin is showing when they lift their legs to march. A lot of them wear the shorter ankle socks normally, but they’re too short for under their uniform. These also sometimes come in multi-packs so they can pair up with their friends, or extras can be donated to the Quartermasters for students who don’t have them.
Under their uniform they wear a black band t-shirt, and lightweight shorts (like PE shorts).
Football Games –
Ms. Glass would like to try using buses for football games this year. Those of you who signed up to load the trailers should report to the school prior to going to the stadium. We will send out a call time by Thursday.
Many band parents try to sit together in the area close to where the band sits. NOTE: These seats are 1st come, 1st serve. Wear red, and bring a cushion, blanket or something to sit on. You DO have to purchase a ticket, even if you are helping with Booster duties such as water, cleaning the stands or working with the pit crew. (You can buy season tickets at REV’s Finance Office, or wait in line at the gate)
Field Shows –
The call time for field shows will vary from week to week. Often Ms. Glass doesn’t get the final performance time until a few days before the event so don’t be surprised if the call time is not available until late in the week. Rick Cummins will e-mail it out as soon as it’s available. (If you aren't on the e-mail list or have questions, you can contact Rick (e-mail: toss_an_apple@me.com or phone number: (909)-633-9817.)
These are lots of fun! Many parents like to go as spectators to see REV’s band perform, and the other schools too. It’s a great feeling for the band when they take the field to the enthusiastic cheers of our boosters! It’s also much different than performing at a football game where the majority of the crowd is there to see the football team and not the band. These competitions are all about the BAND! The field shows are normally held at the hosting high school and there is always an admission fee (anywhere from $5 - $10). Most of them will have some sort of concession area so you can buy food to support their Booster group, or a variety of band related “stuff”. Again, it’s a good idea to bring something cushy to sit on, especially if you plan to be there to watch lots of the other schools – you could be sitting for several hours. We love to hear our booster’s opinions on how we compare to the competition!
The boosters will again be planning meals for students for several of the competition days. These meals are an optional purchase, but we hope that most students will choose to participate. Our goal is to ensure they have a healthy meal on that performance day.
At the end of the night everyone is tired, but we still need to get the trailer unloaded and everything put away. It’s a time for “all hands on deck” so we expect students to stay to help and we appreciate all booster help as well.
If you have questions about anything, please let me know. I can be reached at 909-534-1154, or Deborah.perez@kohls.com
Thanks for reading all the way to this point, and go Wildcats!!
